Breaking Barriers provides a platform where contemporary theater and street dance culture meet, celebrating the diversity of physical qualities. In this particular program we invited 8 dancers to work with us for one week. We paired them up to people from different disciplines whom they had never met before, we challenged them to create work within 4 days and perform this at the end of the week to original music produced by Suren Seneviratne (My Panda Shall Fly) Participating dancers/choreographers: Nyna Moore, Audrey Gibson, Daniel Phung, Luis Rojas, Bailey Harper, Debora Banos-Arauz, Edgar Page and Jason Toney. Mentors & Program Directors: Lisa Engelken and Maren Ellermann This project was funded by Imagine2020 and hosted at the beautiful McNichols Building in Denver, Colorado.

8 Dancers from different backgrounds, disciplines, cultures and genders will be paired up to create original work, with an original soundtrack by music producer Suren Seneviratne, within a one week time frame. On this night that work will be showcased for the first time. A unique project where the dancers are introduced to new ways of creating, the audience will see something that has not been done before and will get a chance to give feedback straight away in an interactive Q&A after the performances. The theme of the night is Barriers, we hope to break the barriers that exist between theatre and street dance culture, celebrating the diversity of physical qualities. Dance is dance and from events like this, we want to elevate existing talent in Colorado while building networks, creating lasting partnerships and a stronger community.
